Exploration of Formen as an Art Therapeutic Component: Focusing on Functions of Formen in Children¡¯s Feeling Dimension
Chang Mee-Sung

Kim Hyun-Soo
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the function of formen as an important interventive means of art therapy. Steiner, a pioneering theorist of anthroposophy, conceptualized human beings as being composed of three different structures (body, soul, and spirit) and four materials (physical body, etheric body, astral body, and self body). Steiner has contended that a healthy individual is one whose three structures are well communicated and whose four materials are in a balanced state. Steiner further presented soul training method (Seelenubung) as a way to promote an individual¡¯s development as a healthy, well-balanced whole. In this study, we first explored the theoretical bases of formen, a core method used in the soul training, as a therapeutic means in the context of art therapy, particularly as a way to develop children¡¯s ¡®feeling¡¯ dimension. Next, we identified potential formen that could be applicable for use with children having issues with feelings. We identified four formens, (formens of spirals, circles, metamorphosis, and repetitions), and reviewed functions of each formen in the development of children¡¯s feelings. This review provides theoretical foundations for the use of formen in art therapy, particularly for children with emotional and emotion-expression/emotion-regulation problems.
